Coaching, Editing, Consulting, Content
With more than two decades as a writing teacher and editor in settings ranging from secondary school classrooms to the Queen’s University’s Writing Centre, for a number of years, I have also served as a private instructor and manuscript consultant to many individuals and literary presses, including McGill-Queen’s, University of Alberta, and University of Calgary Press.
I’m a graduate of UBC’s MFA program, where I sat on the editorial board of Prism International. I have also held a Bread Loaf scholarship and fellowships at the Vermont Studio Center and the Banff Literary Journalism program, and I’ve participated in a number of other workshops, retreats, and residencies. I hold a BA in Philosophy and Political Science from Trinity College, University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Education from Queen’s. Currently, I’m a member of the Writers’ Union of Canada, the Creative Nonfiction Collective, Canadian Creative Writers and Writing Programs (CCWWP), The League of Canadian Poets, and CWILA (Canadian Women in the Literary Arts).
I enjoy mentoring writers at all stages of their development. Many of my former clients have gone on to secure publishing contracts and win prizes and awards.
My approach is simple: I listen, read closely, suggest resources, and ask questions to help you clarify your goals. Writing can be lonely; it’s not always easy to discern what the work is trying to become. A trusted guide can help you untangle the knots, supporting you when you need encouragement, and challenging you to make your work deeper and more nuanced.
Services I provide include manuscript consultation, content editing for structure and coherence, line editing, and coaching. I also love to give workshops to small groups of writers, and have presented in settings ranging from public libraries and university classrooms to busy cafés and ordinary living rooms.
As a proud member of the Kingston Wired Writers, I encourage you to check out our association for a description of our fees and how we work.
With seven years’ experience as a web content provider and editor at the Kingston WritersFest and Precision Nutrition, I’m also available for short-term writing and editing contracts. My background and interests are diverse, so if you have a story you want to tell with verve, clarity, and bite, contact me to discuss whether I’d be a fit.Read how Susan has helped other writers
