Best Canadian Essays

Last week I learned that “White Matter,” which first appeared in the Malahat Review and won an Honourable Mention at the National Magazine Awards, will also appear in Best Canadian Essays 2016, published by Tightrope Books and edited by Joe Kertes and Christopher Doda. It’s an honour to be included.

This essay is about Oliver Twist, and Dickens himself, and phrenology, and the neuroscience of reading, and summer days…and slugs. How do all of these fit together? You’ll have to read it to find out.
